The Complete Moving-Home Checklist

Moving into a new home is exciting and, without a plan, exhausting. A checklist spread over the weeks before and after the move turns a stressful scramble into a sequence of manageable steps.

Two to four weeks ahead, book a reputable packers-and-movers service — get itemised written quotes from two or three, check reviews, and confirm whether transit insurance is included. In Gurgaon, also check whether your society requires prior permission, a time slot or a refundable deposit for using the service lift on moving day.

Declutter before you pack, not after. Sell, donate or discard what you will not use, since you pay to move everything and the lighter the load the cheaper the move. Pack room by room, label every box by room and contents, and keep a separate essentials box for the first night.

Arrange the utility handovers in good time: electricity connection and name transfer, water, piped gas or a new cylinder, broadband and DTH. Note meter readings at both homes on moving day so you are not billed for someone else’s usage.

Update your address where it matters — bank, Aadhaar, employer, insurance, subscriptions and vehicle records — and redirect anything important. Doing this around the move avoids missed statements and delivery mix-ups later.

On moving day, be present to supervise, check the inventory as items are loaded and unloaded, and inspect fragile and high-value items on arrival before signing off. Photograph anything that arrives damaged immediately, in case of an insurance claim.

In the first week, get the new home professionally cleaned before you unpack fully, rekey or change the main door lock for security, locate the mains, water shut-off and distribution board, and test safety fittings. Introduce yourself to neighbours and the RWA or building manager to sort out access, parking and maintenance early.

Finally, keep all your property, agreement and warranty documents together in one folder, and save the numbers of the local electrician, plumber and society office. Settling in is far smoother when the essentials are one place away.
